How to Make and Use Four Thieves Vinegar

The Four Thieves Vinegar Legend

The legend says that people were suffering from the plague, with the citizens numbers reducing greatly day by day. Quarantine measures were heavily enforced upon everyone, afflicted or not, in order to counter the epidemic nature of the disease.

A gang of four thieves moved from house to house robbing the tenants from their belongings. The thieves grew richer and richer and their health remained unaffected by the plague. Eventually, they were caught and sentenced to death. Clever and cunning they were, they bargained their lives by sharing their secret, a magical formula known to us today by the name of Four Thieves Vinegar. The thieves managed to save their lives and escaped from the afflicted town, with the loots or not, nobody knows.

Four Thieves Vinegar and Hoodoo

This formula arrived in New Orleans and Four Thieves Vinegar was well respected not only for his healing and disease-repelling properties, but for its ability to guard the wearer from danger and sure disaster. Four Thieves Vinegar is a vital component in many banishing and healing spells and its recipe is the following:

Key ingredients:

  • Red wine or apple cider good quality vinegar
  • Garlic

Optional ingredients:

  • Mint
  • Lavender
  • Black pepper
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Coriander
  • Chilli pepper
  • Rue
  • Thyme
  • Wormwood
  • Sage

As you can see the key ingredients are two: good quality vinegar and garlic. Now historically, in this recipe each thief contributed one optional ingredient. So I recommend you select 4 ingredients of your choice from the optional list above and add them to your recipe. Intuition and the nature of the situation may act as indicators in order to help you select the appropriate optional ingredients.

Enchanting Four Thieves Vinegar

Now the process, peel and crush the garlic cloves and boil the garlic in the vinegar chanting a spell of your choice. I use the verse below:

“Four thieves vinegar now I make Four elements bless its fate Gods above hear my plea Allow change to come to me.
Four thieves vinegar now I make Four elements bless its fate Negativity is banished from my life Gods let me shine with your light.”

Keep chanting and as the vinegar with the garlic boil, add the rest of the ingredients one at a time. Give them a good swirl before you add another. As a piece of advice I suggest you do not inhale the fumes as they may be very overwhelming (vinegar with garlic remember!

When you have added the last ingredient, give them a good swirl and let them cool down. Then put them in a bottle and let them sit for four days and your Four Thieves Vinegar is ready. Give it a good shake before use!

How to Use Four Thieves Vinegar

Here are some ways you can use Four Thieves Vinegar in a magical working:

Banishing: Use this spell to keep someone bothersome away from you. Write your target’s name on a piece of paper. Some traditions recommend you use brown paper, or parchment. Soak the paper in Four Thieves Vinegar. Fold the piece of paper up as small as you can, and bury in the dirt somewhere.

Protection: Use Four Thieves Vinegar to prevent magical attack, as well as to protect your property. Sprinkle it liberally around the perimeter of your property, and keep intruders away.

Ending a Relationship: In some Hoodoo traditions, there are a variety of spells that use Four Thieves Vinegar to break up a couple, or to cause strife in a relationship.

Healing: This is a great ingredient to use in a healing ritual. After all, look at the history behind it! Use it to anoint a poppet of a sick person, or dab it on the walls and floor of the room where the ill individual lies. Believe it or not, it can even be consumed internally as a tonic to keep disease away.

If you're not a fan of the smell of vinegar, no worries. Many people opt to use an oil blend in place of Four Thieves Vinegar. Use a base oil, something unscented like grapeseed or jojoba, as your carrier oil. You'll need to be sure to do this, because otherwise the undiluted essential oils can be irritating and damaging to your skin.

Using quantities of your choosing, add equal parts of any four of the following essential oils: rosemary, clove, eucalyptus, oregano, lemon, tea tree, or cinnamon. Store your oil in a dark bottle, and be sure to swirl it regularly to blend the essential oils with the carrier oil.
