The dark blue-purple berries of the elder tree, also known as black elder and European elder, are widely used in Northern Europe to make soups, jams and jellies. The berries are also used to make a variety of alcoholic beverages, including a juniper-flavored gin called Beers Vlierke.
In witchcraft and pagan traditions, the elder tree’s reputation as a magical plant makes it a common element of spells. The beads can enhance psychic abilities and open up channels for communication with the spirit world. For those practising herbal magic, elderberries are associated with protection, love, purification, and banishing negative energies.
