Later Christian tradition came to use the Latin word for "Morning Star" (Venus, Bearer of Light), Lucifer, as a proper name for the devil; as he was before his fall from the tyrant of heaven and to become the Lord of this World, Prince of the Powers of Air and the anti-hero who embodies strength and knowledge. As a result, Lucifer has become a by-word for Satan/the Devil in the church and in popular literature as in Dante Alighieri's Inferno and John Milton's Paradise Lost. There are some stories that are roughly analogous. Prometheus was one. The other gods were angry with him for giving fire to humans. But fire was a metaphor for light, which in turn is a metaphor for knowledge and enlightenment. The gods were angry that he gave humans knowledge. The name Lucifer means bringer of light.
